there is a closed issue related to this from a long time ago
When installing the application on a multi-drive system (windows) we should enable the user to specify the data
storagelocation or be able to migrate their existingstorageto a new location. There are some quirks to electron & GPU's from that necessitate the install of the app onC:\which means it is tantamount the storage location be able to be split from the main drive.@peiqiF4ck commented on GitHub (Feb 19, 2025):
I have same problem https://github.com/Mintplex-Labs/anything-llm/issues/3152 about "to specify the data storage location" not found in AnythingLLMDesktop.exe installing setup。 meaning is "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\anythingllm-desktop\storage” Folder can't specify any where
AnythingLLM.exe can specify install anywhere
I hope add this function in next version thanyou workhard
@wencyGit commented on GitHub (Mar 17, 2025):
MacOS also requires setting up data storage to an external hard drive
@MikDal002 commented on GitHub (Apr 26, 2025):
any update on that?
@DoctorMG commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2025):
Same with me. Honestly, that is so annoying - on every open source install again. Always, there are tons of gigabytes frameworks and models included and saved automatically in the user folder, which is usually - we have 2025 - on the smallest SSD drive C:
Every browser or tool like Brave, Zap, LM Studio, ollama - again and again - consumes eating hours of lifetime to figure out if it really does the same rubbish under Windows and how to get rid of it (if possible at all) or to write this text here again.
Yes, please make all this big data savings configurable ALWAYS EVER.
@katoquro commented on GitHub (Sep 15, 2025):
It would be nice to have data migration button in preferences, e.g. how it is done in Jan-ai: You select a new folder, the application moves all data to the new destination and restarts.
(I'm using linux desktop version with AppImage)

When will this issue be resolved? My C drive is running out of space, and I have over a hundred thousand MD documents to import.
@faustorigoni commented on GitHub (Jan 22, 2026):
The same problem here. Uninstalling it now. Worthless.
@faustorigoni commented on GitHub (Jan 22, 2026):
Lol, after uninstall the 9GB of storage taken from C: drive are still there... at this location.
C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\anythingllm-desktop\storage
