In Options -> Connection -> Listening Port section should be a button which tests the selected port if it is open or not. BitTorrent and uTorrent have this feature.
Have a look at this picture: http://img.technospot.net/uTorrent-Setup-Guide-After-test-is-complete.jpg
If the user clicks on the "Run Tests" button then he is able to see the status of the selected port.
