Right now the only way to do so is to check the option TO MINIMIZE IT TO TRAY ALWAYS (which I really, really don't want to do).

i think, you actually don't care at all about the "start minimized" option. you don't need to change it. you just want to be able to "start qbt minimized to tray", while keeping the ability to minimize it manually to taskbar panel, right? if it is so, then your issue is a duplicate of #487
therefore, i suggest you to remove your issue and to upvote the issue #487. let's join to enhance our chances that this feature will be implemented!

btw, the #487 issue also has the following advantage: it'll make possible to autostart qbt minimized to tray, while keeping the ability to start it manually not minimized.
