Yeah, after the first thread I made on the matter, I started 3 more threads trying to bring attention to the matter, but the youtube-dl developers have not addressed the issue at all, it seems.

I found one recent video where the SMIL streams are detected:

http://www.vevo.com/watch/madison-beer/unbreakable/USUV71400894

But the rest still do not work. And Vevo doesn't show upload dates on their own site, so I am unable to pinpoint the date on which Vevo started using the new encryption. It's very disappointing to not be able to download from Vevo.com, because YouTube's 1080p compression is even worse now.

"Cannot download SMIL information", so no 1080p download.

SMIL formats are not available for all videos.
we try to extract them when it's possible.
in the next version there will be more formats to choose from.
and also geo restricted videos will be downloaded from youtube.
