I'm guessing it has something to do with the - symbol in the URL?

Actually I just noticed from the output, that the version homebrew has is old compared to installing youtube-dl using curl.

Removing the homebrew version and installing latest manually using curl fixed the issue.

How often is the homebrew version updated?

YouTube changed their player on November 13th, so you'll need at least youtube-dl 2014.11.13 to download all YouTube videos. See our FAQ if you have trouble updating.
